Base is not optional. It’s structural.

In the Build It Right.™ system, Base is the first stage because everything above it depends on compaction, drainage, and stability. If the base fails, the patio fails.

Our Base & Gravel materials are engineered for long-term performance in Mountain West freeze-thaw conditions. These materials create the compacted, drainable foundation that protects your patio, slabs, and walls from shifting and settlement.

Build the base right. Everything else follows.

Build It Right Stage: Base

Material Types:

• ⅜" Tan Chat
– A compactable fine aggregate ideal for leveling layers beneath patios and pavers. The angular composition locks tightly under compaction while maintaining proper drainage.

• ⅜" Grey Chat – Similar performance characteristics with a neutral gray tone. Excellent for compacted base layers and fine grading applications.

• ¾" Washed Grey Gravel – Clean, washed rock designed for drainage and sub-base applications. Ideal for French drains, structural fill, and areas where water movement is critical.

Applications: Patio base layers, paver installations, slab foundations, drainage systems, structural fill, retaining wall backfill

Q: Can these materials be used for patios and walkways?
A: Absolutely. Concrete sand and ¾” washed gravel provide a stable, well-draining base for both patios and paths.

Q: How much base material do I need?
A: For patios, a 3–4” compacted layer of gravel is ideal. For pathways, 2–3” is usually sufficient.

Q: Can I mix sand and gravel for decorative purposes?
A: Yes. Blending sizes or colors can improve drainage, texture, and aesthetics in garden beds and pathways.

Q: Are these materials durable in freeze-thaw climates?
A: Yes. All materials are selected for durability and consistency across the Mountain West.
