A Story Forever Etched in Stone: The American Stone Legacy
Built From the Ground Up: Three Generations of Expertise
In the mid-1900s, on a rural Idaho farm, Walter Thomas and his family spent their summers exploring and collecting stones. This simple beginning would later become the first-step towards building something that eventually added foundational value to the his family and community. During the long winters, Walt laid stone fireplaces to earn extra income and to give his family a little more during the holidays. That winter hustle turned into a full-time trade, and eventually, Walt built a family legacy.
Walt and his two sons founded American Stone with little more than grit, grit, and yeah, another pinch of more grit. After a series of tragic accidents, Lon and Beverley Thomas became the sole owners. With six children in tow, they kept the business running and the vision alive.
One of those kids was Dan Thomas. He learned the trade from the ground up, literally. From scrubbing shop floors to running quarry operations, Dan worked every job in the company before becoming a partner himself. He doesn’t just know the business; it has been a part of each chapter in his life.
Now, generations in, American Stone is still proudly family-owned and operated, with locations and quarries throughout the Mountain West. Our stone is the foundation of parks, patios, pathways, and places where people gather. It’s woven into the landscapes and legacies of the communities we love and places we call home.
At our core, we believe in building things that last, projects, relationships, and reputations. When you work with American Stone, you're not just getting materials. You're becoming part of a story still being written in stone.
