Build It Right™ Stage 3

Once the base is solid and the surface is installed, your project has structure. Now it needs personality. This is the Features stage.

Fire pits. Fountains. Monoliths. Stone benches. Putting greens. Outdoor kitchens. Water features.

These are the elements people gather around. In design terms, they create the focal points of your space. A patio without features is a surface. A patio with features becomes a destination.

This is where your project starts to feel alive.

What Is a Focal Point?

Every well-designed outdoor space has at least one focal point. A focal point is the element that naturally draws attention and anchors the space. It might be a fire feature where people gather at night, a water feature that adds sound and movement, a monolith or statement stone that grounds the landscape, a putting green that creates activity, or a stone bench that invites people to sit and stay awhile.

Focal points create balance and guide how people experience a space. Without them, landscapes can feel empty or unfinished. With them, spaces feel intentional.

Common Feature Elements

Fire Features

Few things bring people together like fire. Fire pits and fireplaces create natural gathering spaces and extend the usability of outdoor areas into cooler evenings. They often become the centerpiece focal point of patios and outdoor living spaces.

Water Features

Water introduces movement, sound, and calm. From simple fountains to full pond systems, water features add life to a landscape and soften the surrounding materials.

Popular options include bubbling boulders, fountains, ponds and waterfalls, and adding spillways and cascading water features Water features often become the most memorable focal point in a landscape.

Statement Stone & Monoliths

Large stones have been used in landscape design for centuries. Monoliths and large accent stones provide natural structure and visual weight. They work well as landscape anchors or garden focal points or create entry accents or sculpture-like natural elements.

Placed correctly, a single stone can transform an entire space.

Benches & Gathering Spaces

Stone benches create places to pause and enjoy the environment. They can be integrated into patios, fire features, garden pathways and quiet landscape areas.

Benches encourage people to slow down and enjoy the space.

Turf & Putting Greens

Artificial turf and putting greens bring recreation into the landscape. They work especially well in xeriscape environments where water conservation is important.

These features add activity and fun while maintaining a clean, low-water landscape.

Designing With Focal Points

A few design principles help features feel natural rather than random. Start with one primary feature that anchors the space. From there, smaller features can support the design without competing for attention.

Balance the Space

Features should relate to the size and scale of the surrounding landscape. A small yard may benefit from a single well-placed feature. Larger spaces may include multiple focal points that guide movement through the landscape.

Integrate With Surface Materials

Features should feel connected to the surrounding materials. Stone patios, decorative rock, and natural strip accents help features blend into the environment rather than feeling dropped into place. When surfaces and features work together, the space feels cohesive.
